Many of our member foodbanks and their member agencies operate additional targeted programs to promote improved nutrition in children and seniors. These programs include:

  • Summer Food Service Program (SFSP): This program provides free, nutritious meals and snacks to children in low-income areas when they are out of school. The program is operated by the USDA Food and Nutrition Service and is implemented in Ohio by the Ohio Department of Education. SFSP is essential for effective learning every day, all year long, since children who aren’t hungry learn, act, and feel better. If you are interested in including an SFSP site at your organization, contact the Ohio Department of Education. To serve as an AmeriCorps VISTA Summer Associate, and receive a living stipend and education award in return, apply today! To find an SFSP site, view the ODE Map or call 1-855-570-7377.
  • Power Pack (also known as Backpack): Many of our member foodbanks operate these special programs to provide nutritious food for children at risk of hunger to eat over the weekend. In addition, the Ohio Association of Foodbanks is operating a summer weekend backpack meals program for the first time this summer which will provide weekend meals to 10,000 Ohio children for 10 weeks.
  • Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP): This program is administered by the USDA Food and Nutrition Service and provides basic, protein-rich foods like vegetables, meats, peanut butter, cheese, and cereals to seniors at risk of hunger. Many, but not all, counties in Ohio are served by CSFP; view which counties are served. To learn more about CSFP, visit the National CSFP Association website.
  • Emergency Food and Shelter Program (EFSP): This program is a federally-funded initiative that supplements and expands the work of local organizations that provide assistance to people in economic emergencies. Any organization with a mission to relieve hunger and homelessness is eligible for EFSP funding. Funds may be used for supplemental feeding, shelter, rent/mortgage assistance, and utility assistance. Learn more at the EFSP website.
